ENABLING CHILDREN & YOUTH THROUGH
EDUCATION • HEALTH • RECREATION

What We Do

Working with children and youth, we initiate and support projects that help build skills and support success in their lives. Focusing on our three ‘Pillar’ areas of child development (education, health and recreation), our goal is to provide a fun learning environment to foster growth and leadership.

We are working hard to offer our children and youth something every child deserves – an opportunity. The project’s aim is;

"To build a sustainable centre that the children, youth, and overall community can use and take ownership over to better their current situations."

Where we started: the Kid's Learning Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a country where access to education for many children and youth living in poverty is not a right, but an unachievable dream. This means that many children in Ethiopia will never step foot inside a school or spend time in an organized class environment. Unfortunately, this also means that they are missing the chance to grow and develop into leaders of their society. This is where we hope to help.

Strong Hearts' first initiative in 2008 was the Kids Learning Centre in the Mekenisa area of Addis Ababa. The Learning Centre began by offering basic necessities required for child and youth development, including after hours education and recreation programs and community support.

With local leaders running the centre, we have been able to use contacts and knowledge of the local situation to help deliver the most effective programs.

Where are we now?

Starting small and growing naturally, the Kid’s Learning Centre has expanded from roughly 20 kids in December 2008 to over 250 kids currently accessing the various programs. From a single outreach program to over 15 innovative projects, the scope of the centre continues to grow.

Expansion of our programs came shortly after starting in 2008. In 2009, after identifying a strong need for access to kindergarten for local kids, we hosted the first year of our Montessori Kindergarten school. In September 2010, that school expanded to include three levels of Kindergarten. Throughout the next 7 years we have continued to expand to support the kids education, including opening an elementary school to provide our Kindergarten students the ability to grow with their peers through formal educaiton. Now in 2017, we have grown with our children up to Grade 5 and towards a life of learning!

Along the way we've also expanded into other areas of community support, including a day care centre to support kids 3 and under (and their mothers), a hospice care outreach program, and skill-building and micro-enterprise programs. Programs offered at the Learning Centre include:

  • Youth Leadership Workshops
  • After School Study Programs
  • Home Work Assistance and Tutoring
  • National Exam Preparation Courses
  • English Classes
  • Dialogue and Discussion Programs
  • Crafts and Games
  • Open Centre (recreation)
  • Sports Camps
  • Holiday Celebrations
  • Adult Women’s Community Discussion Program
  • Basic Health Training
  • And others…
